I’m trying to create a box that opens up to be flat and then folds back up.
When I try to use the joints, I’m getting some unwanted results.. this may be a modelling problem rather than a joints problem.
Here are the steps I’ve done so far:

-drew a spline representing one side of the box (it’s kind of a weird shape)
-dropped spline into extrude nurbs (no fillets)
    -changed extrude nurbs into polygon
    -connected all resulting polygons together
-added joints to the new object
-rotate joints and you get this result (see attached).

How do I model this thing so that I just get flat surfaces even when folded and manipulated?

    Thanks!

    Here’s the project:
    3694_boxfold01.zip
The uncommitted extrude nurbs is in the “backup” null.

what version? You can set up an IK Chain without using joints at all (just using objects or even Nulls) and the box parts would not flex at all (I’m guessing that’s the problem since I can’t see your example).
Another possibility depending on how complex your box and animation are is to just keyframe it or perhaps a bit of xpresso – this would all rely on the separate panels (3 in the case of your example) being separate objects though.

Scott! I have been trying to find a way to do animation using joints connected to Extrude nurbs for ages.
Please can you help – I tried to do it just from working from your project file but I just can’t get the joints to rig to the extrude nurbs.
    Perhaps you can elighten me!
    Thanks

Nevermind – just found the ‘bind’ button! Awesome.
