New in CS6, you can convert vector layers to shapes:

You probably want to split up the Illustrator graphic into multiple layers (one for each object you’d like to independently control in Ae), import it as a composition, and separately convert each vector layer to shapes.
You can then extrude the shapes with the ray-traced 3D renderer.
