  • Extremely Poor render quality?

Posted by Jack Monkiewicz on March 27, 2010 at 11:14 am

    Hello everyone,

hoping to get some insight on why my renders are turning out so poorly. I haven’t had this issue before so it has taken me a bit by surprise.

to sum it up, footage was shot in HD from a variety sony camera’s, mainly; FX1, UX20

project setting are 720p HD at 25fps, as im in the Pal region.

exporting the same 720p HD etc.

once finished rendering the video looks like trash! VERY VERY noticeable horizontal line appear, as if the setting is integrated rather than progressive, especially noticeable on fast moving objects. over all the picture is not sharp and almost looks youtube-ish.

this project is meant to be finished and this has been a huge step backwards.
any help would be appreciated, really really appreciated.

    cheers
    jack

It sounds like an interlacing issue. The FX1 doesn’t shoot 720p so Vegas must deinterlace it. Did you change any of the media settings. You should not have unless Vegas guessed wrong. Did you change any of the project settings or just use the standard Vegas HDV 720-25p (1280×720, 25.000 fps)? What is your project Deinterlace method set to? It should probably be set to Blend Fields. If there is a lot of action, you may have to use Interpolate Fields.

    hi john,

thanks for taking the time to respond.

the reason why i set the project setting to 720p is because when i originally set the project to 1080 50i it seemed to come out as 1080 25i just below the preview screen. im not referring to the preview itself but rather the second option down which says project. this made me think that the horizontal bars were due to the low frame interlace??

I will look up how to de-interlace – blend fields and hope this improves the quality.

John i noticed after doing a search that you have help others with similar horizontal bar issues, i would really like to thank-you for helping those less tech savvy and learning at a slower pace.

    cheers

This is just because the terms used in video are confusing. PAL 25fps is really 50i. Each frame is composed of two interlaced fields. 50i is not 50 frames per second but rather 50 fields per second. So if you see 25i it really means 50i. They are unfortunately used interchangeably.

I will look up how to de-interlace – blend fields and hope this improves the quality.

Since both of your sources are 50i I would keep the project at 50i as well. Then just render to 720-25p when you are finished. This way, Vegas will only have to deinterlace the video once when it renders. This leaves less chance for deinterlace issues during editing.

Thank you for the kind words. I enjoy video editing and I enjoy teaching and helping others. This forum allows me to enjoy both so it really is my pleasure to help those who are traveling the same path as I have.

Issue appears to have been solved with some simply project setting adjustments. Thanks to John for assessing the issue and suggesting alternatives.

also, this thread was very helpful https://forums.creativecow.net/thread/24/877001

    great forum!

hi guys back again with the same problem,

footage shot with sony fx1 in 1080i vegas set to HD 1080i, then rendered to 720p. VERY VERY noticeable horizontal lines, looks the same as the original problem in this thread.

any ideas? really appreciate the input.

….also, i have noticed the interlace is evident in low light situations on renders at 720p, however the clips with good light show no interlace. then if i render in 1080i the low light clips dont have evident interlacing but the clips with good light do…what to do?

You said that you fixed the previous problem by adjusting your project settings. Did those same settings not work on this project? Once again, what is your deinterlace mode set to in your project properties?

ahhh, thats is what has happened. i havent manually set the deinterlace. i had saved a project setting for my fx1, being 1080i, blend fields and then rendered out to 720p. however it seems the interlace option has reset itself to ‘none’.

    thanks again john!!

however it seems the interlace option has reset itself to ‘none’.

Here is the “gotcha” that many people don’t realize. The project presets only save the top part of that dialog!!! So… Pixel format, Render quality, Motion blur, and Deinterlace method are NOT part of the project preset and will be whatever you left them at.

What you need to do is set your project properties up for your FX1, set your deinterlace method to Blend Fields and then at the bottom of the project properties dialog, check the box that says, “Start all new projects with these settings” and press OK or else it will happen again and again.
