    Extreme hard drive write speed fluxuation any recomendations

    I have 3 Thermaltake external esata bays that hold 2 drives each, with these 6 external sata drives i also have 6 internal sata drives.

    When I run a BlackMagic speed disk test some times the externals write at 100 mb/s to 115 mb/s and then for no (apparent) reason, (when I notice my editing becoming sluggish), I check my drive speeds and then they testing out are 13 mb/s to 17 mb/s. this comes and goes seeming for no reason?? Even on my raptor drives?

    Any body got a clue what is happening.

    I defrag regularly so they are all defraged.

    Do you have “Green” drives installed? They will throttle back to slower speeds to conserve energy.

    No, they are not green. 2 of them are raptor drives. it seems as though there is something I must trigger somewhere? I have taken a drive out of one bay and move it to another bay then it will work fast for a while. then drop down again, I can pull it out of that bay then put in another and it will speed up again?
    When they drop they drop to the speed of usb2.

    what do you think of G Tech external raid system with esata card?

    I am not a big fan of RAID systems, mostly because they don’t add anything to the editing process, so I have no input on the G-Tech box.

    However, I have a couple of dozen PATA drives (350-500Gb) that are in a box in the basement. I have considered building a RAID NAS box just to use them.

    Bot, back to your issue.

    I can’t imagine how a non-green drive would slow down with use. Could there be a cache in RAM filling up?
