extraordinarily dumb question
Can fiber switches and cards be used by themselves to connect
Macs using IP like a regular ethernet switch… or do you have to set up a SAN?Just looking for a faster network setup.

you can use 10Gig Ethernet cards and a 10 Gig ethernet switch (expensive like a QLogic Fibre switch) and use normal Apple AFP network stuff. You want easy (but more money) – 10Gig is easy.
