    Hi All,

I recently got tossed a bunch of old courtroom footage for a documentary I’m working on. The footage came as .AVI files and .DAT files. I’ve managed (through a very convoluted process) to extract the video from the .AVI files (encoded with a Window Media codec) using a video convertor (OJOsoft Total Video Converter) on a P.C. However, no audio makes it through the conversion process.

The .DAT files say they are encoded with an Mpeg stream, but when using VCD gear on my windows machine to run the conversion, it says it cannot locate the mpeg stream within the .DAT file?

I’ve tried converting the .AVI to .mp4, .mp3, .mov, .wmv but the audio never makes it through the conversions.

I’m running out of ideas, any thoughts would be appreciated.

You might have some success with a utility called MPEG Streamclip. It’s free, and opens almost anything, and transcodes to almost anything.
