Extracting events from media
I’ve downloaded a family home video from way back and I want to create a new movie of a certain subject matter from the original. This means a lot of scenes to move. What I have done so far is mostly by splitting a scene and inserting it in the video time line. Eventually however mistakes can be made and other unpleasant things can go wrong. Maybe someone with more experience can tell me of a better way to select and move events from the video overlay into the video time line.

I don’t even use the trimmer. I just drag the video onto the timeline, and drag the edges to make it exactly how I want it. You can drag the same video onto the timeline again and drag the edges to use a different region of that video, then drag the whole event up next to the first. Also any event you split in the trimmer can still be adjusted on the timeline, even larger that where you split it. This is nondestructive editing. You never really cut a video, unless you render a section to a smaller clip. Even then the original is still intact. Hope this helps, Danny Hays

I should have said I was working on the video in the video overlay track. I agree about the trimmer about all it does is clutter up the display and hard drive. What I have done is split an event in the overlay track then bring it down into the video track. Go back to the overlay and do it again with another event. And so on. The problem is that I have had trouble getting the events in the video time line moved around due to the large number of them which is then very confusing. There are duplicate events in the video timeline. I just hoped there was an easier way to do it. I may try marking wanted events in the overlay timeline then just use those marks to split at these marks and move to the video time line.
