external video
Posted by Victoria Murphy on January 17, 2006 at 3:16 amI am having trouble viewing my footage on my external monitor. When the playhead is on a still frame, the image appears on the ex. monitor. As soon as I start playing my footage in the canvas, the image disappears on the ex. monitor and reappears on the monitor when I stop playing the footage, showing the new image at the new point in the media. I am playing a rendered clip, so it is not rendering on the fly. I’ve gone to view/external video many times and tried All Frames, Single Frames and Show Current. Nothing solves the problem. I don’t see anything wrong with my audio/video settings. Any ideas/suggestions? Thanks very much. Victoria

#8 External Monitor Viewing.Shane’s Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows VideoTechinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can’t view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

January 17, 2006 at 3:46 pmDavid, My set up is: Mac to sony deck via firewire; deck to monitor via S-video cable & RCA jack for audio. The last time I worked in FC (a few months ago) it was was working fine. Now, it is partially working in that when the playhead is parked in the timeline, the image shows up on my ex monitor as well as in the canvas; but when I play the sequence, the image appears only in the canvas. Once I stop the playback, the updated image appears on the ex monitor. So some signal is getting through.

January 17, 2006 at 3:53 pmBryce, Thank you. #4 in Shane’s instructions solved the problem. Once I set the image size in the canvas to “Fit in Window” it began to playback properly on my ex. monitor.

January 17, 2006 at 4:26 pmAll the thanks go to Shane for his stock answers to FAQ’s. It was evening here on the west coast and I wasn’t sure he was monitoring this forum at the time.
The only thing that I would add to the number 4 check is by pressing the shortcut Shift+Z (Shift plus Z together) while clicked in the Canvas will do a “Fit to Window”. Shift+Z also works in the sequence timeline window when you want to see all your clips without scrolling.
You might find Final Cut Pro 4 Default Keyboard Set-up .PDF helpful. It is the best color coded printable keyboard map I have ever found. You can open it up in Mac OS X Prview or Adobe Acrobat and do a key word search like ‘mark’ and it will take you to every instance of mark like ‘mark in’ or ‘mark out’.
