My internal hard drives that I use as capture/edit discs on my Mac Pro 8-Core are filling up. I need to look at an expanded external storage solution for capturing and editing. I edit in HD footage (XDCAM EX 1080p). Any recommendations? I’m looking for a cost effective external storage solution with a price tag of no more than $2,000…and probably at least 8TB capacity. Any recommendations would be greatly appreciated. Thanks.

    Rod,

I would suggest that you pose this question on the Raids and Arrays Forum at https://forums.creativecow.net/raid. There you will will screamed at and ranted at by Bob Zelin, who will tell you why your $2000 for a DIY RAID 5 is a bad idea and why it is insulting to the fine manufacturers who make the Cow possible for all of us.

    “External storage solution recommendations “

I am so glad that someone has finally asked about this topic, which has remained in the dark for so many years. How this has been overlooked in past discussions on this board is truly mysterious.

    I have this:

Bare case…$600. Raid 0 or Raid 5. Then buy 1TB, 1.5TB or 2TB drives on your own (all the SAME model)…and there you go.

What baffles me is the extreme infrequency of posts in the FCP forum about shooting with DSLRs and working with h.264 footage…

    Hi,
Is eSata a better option than EPCIe? Re Shane’s recommendation, what is the speed tradeoff of RAID 5 vs RAID 0? I’m one of those said dSLR users (Canon D7), similarly looking for an external storage solution for a 17″MBP that comes in under $3K. I think David Weiss recently called a RAID 1 a waste of money, so I’ve scratched that off the list.

I’ve been following these external storage topics for a few weeks. I just posted a similar question in the RAID forum at :
