External Preview Monitor Setup for Powerbook
I shot a few videos for friends who tried hang-gliding and gave a compilation DVD to the hang-gliding instructor. He was impressed enough that he’s asked me to shoot a promo for him in exchange for lessons 🙂 Plus, it will be good content for my first demo reel.
To date, I’ve edited on my PB G4 but I’m seeing clear differences between playback on the LCD and viewing on a DVD of my initial rough cut. So, I’ve decided I need an external monitor for playback preview.
There seem to be 2 (cheap) ways to hook up a monitor (or likely, cheap CRT TV for me – have not bought it yet).
1. Link Powerbook S-Video port to external TV. Setup TV as Powerbook display using NTSC. Run Final Cut (5.0.4) and set to Cinema Display Preview – Raw.
2. Hookup Panasonic GS250 camera via Firewire and connect AV port on camera to external TV. Setup external display in Final Cut as Firewire.
Option 1 seems to be the better bet as I’d rather not have the camera in the edit process (other than logging). Also, S-Video is better quality and my camera has no S-Video port. However, Cinema Display Preview doesn’t seem to be designed for external NTSC monitors. Maybe I’m doing something wrong here?
I’m sure someone’s been here before 🙂
