Seems obvious now, but for a while I could not get crisp external monitor playback. If I scrubbed the video in FCPX the monitor would show a sharp picture, but it would deteriorate when played. It would go soft and edges were unstable.

Tried everything in the control panel for my three year old Blackmagic Design Decklink HD card in my old MacPro 1,1 but no luck.

I was about to give up and figured that both the card and my MacPro were just too old and that the Beta driver was not yet perfected. Whatever rationalization fit.

Then I thought about looking into the the prefs for FCPX. Yep. I had Playback set to Best Performance. When I switched it to HIgh Quality, external monitoring was crisp on play. Just like it should be.

The above tip is what worked with me at home with a MacPro 1,1 and a three year old DeckLink card.

At work, on a MacPro 3,1 and a brand new, latest model, DeckLink card, the opposite is true. I can’t get smooth playback unless I choose ‘Better Performance” in the FCPX Playback prefs.

Both machines have 16GB of RAM.

    Go figure.

I’m using an AJA Kona LHi on a 2010 Mac Pro. Can’t get great quality with either Best Performance or High Quality.

Best Performance is slightly better of the two. It looks like nothing’s rendered fully (even though it says 100% rendered), and all my 525i29.97 footage looks like it’s been deinterlaced (progressive)…it looks like interlaced footage played on an LCD computer monitor, when my broadcast monitor is a JVC DT-V20L3GZ…which leads me to believe AJA has simply taken what’s in the player window and ported it to a broadcast monitor… Don’t know another way to describe it. I’m sure I’m wrong, but that’s what it looks like.

I do have multiple formats in my storyline, but that shouldn’t make a difference, because I put the same sequence and clips in FCP7 and it looks fine.

    I guess it’s because it’s still a beta…hope they get it finalized.
