  • External Monitor Question…

Okay, so I’ve got my external monitor hooked up to my deck via S-video and my deck is going into my computer via firewire. I fire up FCP HD, set View-External Video-All Frames, and then View-Video Playback-Apple Firewire. When I do this I am able to see a still image of my timeline on my external monitor but that is all. The video plays fine in my canvas on the computer, and when I stop the play in the timeline the frame I stop on pops up on my external monitor. So, I go to Audio-Video settings-AV Devices and uncheck “Mirror on Desktop”. Now, the video plays back fine on my monitor, but my canvas will only show freeze frames when I stop play. What do I need to do so that I can view the video both in my canvas and in the external monitor simultaneously and in synch? Is this possible, or am I making myself crazy for nothing?

Here’s my list of things to check:

    #8 External Monitor Viewing.

    Shane’s Stock Answer #8:

A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv

Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.

Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows Video

Techinially, this should send synched video to your TV

If for some reason you can’t view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:

    1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.

    2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.

    3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.

    4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.

    5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices

    6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed

If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

What format is your timeline set up for? DV? If so, use the dv easy setup. Hit control-q to choose the easy setup you need (ntsc or pal).

If you are working in anything other than dv, the firewire output won’t work.

Format is DV. I just played a different sequence, with all the same settings, and for some reason this one plays back perfectly in synch on both my monitor and my computer screen.

Well then, what’s the difference between your sequences? Something’s in there you just have to find the discrepancy.
