    Hi there,

I’m having a problem getting an external monitor preview for pp2.
I have a TV connected through s-video output on my geforce 7950GT which is recognised and being used properly by the geforce software (it is being used as a secon monitor) but PP2 will not recognise it in playback options. Instead it just lists the DV output to my camera which isnt even connected.
I have tried the different monitor configurations in the geforce settings ie dual display, span display etc but still no recognition in Premiere.
If anyone has any clue how to fix this please help as im becoming rather infuriated.

    Thank you

    Paul

    Paul,

If you want to use an external monitor, you have to use fire wire out to your cam and connect that to your TV. PP only outputs SD through fire wire.

    Hi
    Thanks for the speedy reply.

So is there no way at all to get a realtime preview for SD? I once did a hdv program on a different pc and got it so i assumed it worked for sd too.

This seems a bit ridiculous. I have a canopus but i cant work with that stupid delay. So there really is no wya to get realtime playback?

    Thanks

    Paul

What stupid delay are you talking about? And what Canopus product are you talking about?

For SD the suggestion I gave works OK for me, but not for HDV. For that you need different hardware, like the AJA Kona.

Putting on my magical wizard’s hat, I sometimes attempt to read the minds of the people who post around here. Let me attempt such a show of magical prowess.

“stupid delay” ??? Hmmm. Could Paul be talking about the delay that takes audio and video out of sync? The one that was solved by most people so long ago that they forgot they ever fixed it?

It has to do with the “fixes” that Microsoft put into the msdv.sys file in SP2. The one from SP1 works fine.

My Premiere Pro page has the instructions and a link to a file you might want. Check it out towards the bottom of the page under the heading “Video on external monitor one second behind the one on your PC screen? Try this!” Scroll down to find it in the Check this stuff out section

If my magic fails to provide the correct answer, please forgive me. If it helps, please pause a moment to remember the old ways. It helps to restore the magic in us all.

    Hi,

the canopus mentioned is an advc-100. By delay i meant the delay you get from anything firewire, audio and visual are about 1 or 2 seconds behind. The same as when you capture, the pc shows the video a second or 2 behind the cam or deck.

Will that fix on your website make the canopus output perfectly in sync with my desktop? I had never heard of such a fix.

    Thanks

    Paul

Even at the speed of light there is a delay between your monitor here and the TV 6 feet away, due to transmission. In case of fire wire from PC > Deck > TV through classic cables the lag is even more. Nothing you can do about it, but 2 seconds seems extravagant. It should more in the range of 0 to 0.5 seconds. If you disable sound on the PC and enable it on the external device, you will not notice the delay.

I’ve just tried that driver fix and it works!!

Thanks very much! I had no idea that was the problem, I had just always assumed that the delay was caused by the conversion from digital to analogue.

    Thanks again

Well, maybe I am a descendant of Merlin after all (he says as he pats himself on the back for digging up that moldy oldie).

Paul, back to your original issue. The Geoforce 7950GT certainly outputs Y/C to an external monitor vis Premiere Pro 2. It also outputs YUV and does a very good job as well without any delays. We’ve had this setup for over six months without any hitches.
Just make sure you have the latest drivers. BTW: It only works with the 7950 card and above.

    Hi there,

Could you please tell me the settings you have used in order to make this work? Are you talking about SD or HD preview?

    Thank you
