    Hello everyone,

So I recently started having a seemingly random issue with my external monitor. What happens is when I am previewing a movie, the preview window IN Final Cut works just fine, but the external monitor (where the video preview is full screened) shows the video for a second, then becomes really choppy, then freezes completely. All the while the preview window in FCP is still showing the video just fine. I have tried buying new Mini Display adapters (I’ve now tried both DVI and VGA), I bought a new DVI cable, a new VGA cable, I hooked it up to other external monitors, and it has the problem every single time. Everything else in relation to the external works fine! This weird freezing problem is the only issue it seems to be having. And this came out of nowhere! It was working just fine, then suddenly one day this was happening. 🙁 Oh, and I have tried FCP 6.0 AND 7.0, both of which produce the same result.

Does anyone have any idea what could be happening? If not I will probably just end up calling Apple…

    Thank!
    Nick

So it seems you tried everything but it sounds like a software setting question , maybe you skipped this one :

The timeline settings must be the same as your monitor system.Otherwise the exactly same thing happens what you described. So , if you use an NTSC monitor your timeline codec setting must be NTSC (any kind of NTSC).Refresh device , All Frames then it should work.

Hmmm, no luck. I messed around with quite a few of those settings and nothing seems to really make a noticeable difference. Still very choppy playback on the monitor…. Any other ideas?

OK here’s another update I just noticed. If I switch the video playback to “Desktop Preview – Main” where it simply plays full screened on my actual laptop, it is even laggy and choppy there! What’s the deal?! This is blowing my mind.

    Hi-

I’m having the same issue, but oddly enough everything worked fine before I reinstalled FCP 7.0.1. I have a Mac Pro dual 2.66 and use a DellE248WFP for my timeline monitor and an LGW2453V for my playback monitor. Selecting “Digital Cinema Desktop Main” and making sure “All Frames” were selected, I got flawless full-screen playback on my HDV 108024p project/sequences.

I re-installed the entire Final Cut Suite 3 previously as I was getting some crashes upon quitting….and now the exact same settings and sequences only skip, as Nick mentioned. Also, when I try “Digital Cinema Desktop Preview Main”, I get the same result on my other monitor. When I escape out of that mode and go back to View-External Video–it is reset back to “off”!

I’ve tried switching my monitor configuration and then have the playback issue on my Dell instead of my LG, so I know it’s not a monitor setting or cable issue.

My project EasySetup matches my sequences and media-set to HDV1080p24 Firewire Basic.

Does anyone know if anything external to Final Cut Pro could be affecting this? I’m running QuickTime 7.6.4, but I think that’s what I had previously. I just updated my Flip4Mac, but I don’t think that would be what’s causing problems.

I realize I can re-install again, but I noticed that hasn’t worked with some people who have posted about this problem.

    Thanks!

I am having the same problem. The playback worked fine just before i upgraded to the new FCP. Now Every time i View playback on the Cinema desktop monitor the video skips. When i look at my activity monitor there is a large random peak in disk activity that i cant explain ( it seems to correspond with the glitch but i cant tell). also some compressor controllers are not responding but compressor seems to work fine. Are these related or what? Is there something set wrong in my settings or is it a glitch in the new upgrade? I tried all the solutions in the thread so fair nothing worked. Thanks
