(Didn’t see a forum for this so just posted it here)

Does anyone have an opinion on the best external harddrives to buy?
I understand Lacie makes some good ones, but don’t know much about other brands.
I’m on a mac but I’d like it to be compatible with PC’s as well.

Which gives you the best bang for your buck?

It may be just me, and they seem to have a good reputation, but I’ve had two Lacie drives go bad just out of warranty in the past 3 years, so I’m done with Lacie…I purchased a 1 Terrabyte Maxtor drive (USB) about a year ago, and it has worked nicely (so far).

We just got this week one of those Maxtor OneTouch III 1 TB external drives (RAID 0 SATA, connected via Firewire 800). Works pretty nicely, but of course those drives are not really meant for permanent use under maximum duress, so I expect it to break down once its time comes (presumably in 2 years).

I have gone through about 30 hard drives through my computer life so far.

And the winner is ? Seagate. All others have crashed on me within 4 years of continuous use.

Not to go against any particular brand name here, and that may simply be luck, but expecially for external drives, this is the only name I now trust.

They have, from what I have seen, the best cooling system around, and for an external hard drive that’s a very important factor.

I too have been running an external Seagate HD through a really cheap case I got from ebay. No cooling on the case and I leave it on for days straight, often with music streaming off it if I forget to close iTunes. Can’t be good for the drive, but it is nearly three years old and has never had a problem.
