  • External Hard Drive Solution?

Posted by John Taylor on November 21, 2007 at 5:16 pm

    Hello All,

I am looking for an economical, reliable, external hard drive solution, about 500 gig, for media backup and as an editing source drive in a pinch.

Looking around there are way too many choices.
Please help me narrow down my search based on your experiences.

I am running Premiere Pro 2 on a Dell PC with XP Pro.

Hope you all have a peaceful and relaxing Thanksgiving

    Thanks in advance, JT

I’ve got something just for you. You want a drive you can swap out, and that’s what I would look into.

    Enclosure:

    https://www.circotech.com/eshadrexenbo.html

    Drive:

    https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148288

This stuff is Sata, and I would highly recommend it over all else, even if you have to buy a card.

I think the up front cost may be a little more (maybe not) if you add the drive to it, but in the end, you can have as many internal drives as you want, and they are much cheaper than external ones.

BTW, I built several high end machines through the Circotech people and they are grear guys.

Thanks for the reply and links Vince. I had not thought about putting a package together.

I was looking at the My Book Pro & FreeAgent but your suggestion makes more sense to me.

    Thanks & Happy Thanksgiving…

If you have any SATA ports available on your Mobo all you need for a external SATA drive is a eSATA to SATA feed through bracket, they are about $7

    Hi –

I am looking for a backup solution for my machine. I need to backup 2 drives which are 640GB each. I figure I can settle for 1GB or so using the Western Digital MyBook.

My question is how do I make sure my external harddrive is updated regularly? I dont really want to install some taxing 3rd party software. Would it be smart to write a batch script using xcopy? I could have it run everynight. Does this make sense? Any other ideas?

    Thanks.

If you have XP professional, or Vista, it comes with a backup scheduler.
