  • external hard drive setup for HD editing

Posted by Bret Latter on February 23, 2006 at 4:58 am

I’m putting a computer together for HD editing. I want to use external hard drives with it. Preferably IDE drives. I know firewire drives will not have the substaned troughput needed. So I’m hoping someone here will be kind enough to point me in the right direction.

    Thanks for any info,
    Bret

What type of HD? HD100? or full HD 1080. What is your hardware? What OS? What deck? SDI?

    Hope this helps-

Sorry if I didn’t give all the info. The HD I’m talking about is HD 1080. The OS will be the latest, 10.4…?
Now I’m not in the need for capture card info. I’m building this in steps. All I’m worried about right now is setting up the external hard drives to be able to carry the substained throughput.

I hope this is enough info.

Well for HDV 1440X1080 (25Mb) you don’t need anything. For HD Full res 1920X1080 through SDI think in terms of SCSI 3 RAID 5 or Fiber channel. My advice is wait to buy the drives till when you need them. Don’t even think about it till you do. If you don’t edit HD there is no reason to have drives that can do it. Later the drives will cost less and be bigger. The longer you wait the more you’ll get for the money.

    Hope this helps-
