  • External Hard Drive Recommendation…

Posted by Jerry Neal on March 1, 2007 at 10:46 pm

    Hello,

I need to add an external hard drive for video storage. Would one of the “my book” Western Digital models be sufficient? I have one of these now (250 gig) that seems to work fine. Or do I need some type of Raid configuration? I wasn’t sure if Vegas has any increase in performance related to the type of hard drive that is being used.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Also, I would prefer to stay under the $400 mark and I plan to move to HDV soon.

    Thanks

I have 2 of the external WD “My Book” 300GB Firewire/USB drives and so far I love them. I use them for video storage. Any video I’m working on goes to one of the internal 250GB drives.

I had bad luck using the Maxtor One-Touch and editing video in them. ONe of the drives lasted just over the warranty and crashed.

I’ve been buying external Seagate drives (love their warranty!!) when they’re on sale as well as an external case (USB & firewire).
    They work great 🙂

I have a WD 320 gig “my book”
I have 2 LaCie D2 drives both firewire. Very happy
(My friend had a LaCie D2 that suddenly got bad sector errors and never behaved right even after full re-formats. But I think he was abusing “hot swapping” while he had data in transit etc..)

I regularly have 2-3 drives and a camera running, converting simultaneously
You would never notice that I was editing on externals.
The performance hasnt shown its weakness yet.
Better to have several smaller video drives than one big one in my opinion.
Maxtor has treated me badly more than several times !

HD however…you will need to rethink your pipeline for that realm.

You guys leave your external HD on all the time or only when you use them????

I know LaCie are pretty good for that I just bought a 500g my book just want to know if they can support being on 24/7

I have 250 WD My Book and it turns on an off with my computer and spins down when not in use, which is a bother at times when I have to wait for it to spin back up when I open My Computer or similar global disk reading programs.

Yeah I heard the idle mode is annoying I use my 500g for music (dj) so it’s not so bad to kick in due to the files size and transfer rate (.wav or mp3)

but I haven’t tried it with dve yet

Nice to see Vegas getting mentioned along with the others.

I have 3 external seagates.. I have noticed they go into sleep mode often and really is a pain..There is no way to turn this off.. I wish I had known this before filling them up..
