I hope this isn’t off point here…I have a Mac Pro OS X 10.4.11 & I’ve been using a Western Digital 500gb external hard drive for editing. Suddenly the Hard drive is not recognized…not showing up in disk utility or on the desktop. It is not the cables themselves…they work. I have tried a lot of things. Rebooting etc…It won’t work thru the USB 2.0 or the Firewire ports and they all work with other devices….I think the problem is the drive itself but the hard drive spins, the blue light is on. But nothing shows up.
I downloaded Diskwarrior but it didnt see the drive either. I called WD and they will replace the drive but how do I get my stuff off if it doesn’t see the drive?
    Any ideas here?

First try it on a different mac, it the same thing happens, it is definitely the drive.

If it is the drive, then you could try and take the drive itself out of the enclosure to see if it is just a bad enclosure. Keep in mind if you do that then the manufacturer will most likely deny service because you have voided the warranty by opining it.

If the drive it self still does not respond out of the enclosure then you will need to send it off to a data recovery specialist that will cost you anywhere from 200-6000 to get data depending on what all they have to do.

My motto as far as data goes is, “If the data is important keep it in two different places.”

There are no “technical solutions” to your “artistic problems”.
Don’t let technology get in the way of your creativity!

I have exactly the same problem. What did you do finally? I have a lot of data on it that I cannot afford to loose. Please help.
