June 11, 2009 at 3:22 pm[Ron Lindeboom] “Personally, as someone who has been around for years and remembers Iomega’s track record over the last 10 to 15 years, I sure wouldn’t do it. “
Ditto. I haven’t used Iomega for I don’t know how long and don’t know anyone professionally who runs them. I would personally avoid them.

June 11, 2009 at 4:20 pm[Ron Lindeboom] “I can’t say that I personally know one person in this site that has gone this way in this arena. (And as the guy that helped build this place, believe me, I know many of the people here.)
“I can’t say I ever remember Ron wading in on a hard drive discussion, so take that into consideration. And, consider that the term “The click of death” was originally coined as term about Iomega drives, all of which eventually would go south after the dreaded clicking would begin. The company has restructured since then, and is supposedly manufacturing better product, but like Ron, I don’t know anyone who uses them.

June 12, 2009 at 6:07 pmWe’ve had 2 Iomegas die on us recently where I’m at. OWC has been rock solid though, I’ve never had an OWC drive die. Lacie seems to be loved by half the world, hated by half. But personally, if half of the people I talk to say no way, I’m going to stay away from it. I know I’ve seen at least a dozen dead Lacies over the last couple years from various people. At least no one mentioned Maxtor here, huh?
Drives are so cheap you can afford to get something decent. OWC and G-Tech seem to be getting the highest ratings that I’ve been hearing about lately.

August 6, 2009 at 2:37 pmI too am looking for an external hard drive compatible with FCP and G5. What do you think about “Formac Disk XTR Raven Black External 1TB FireWire 800/400 HDD”?
Ron, what should we get rather than Iomega?
What drives do the people “on the site” use?
I want something fast and reliable but am completely confused. Would Firewire connection be fast enough, or should I go for SCSI or fiber channel?
I have never used external drive for video editing, so any advice would be most appreciated. Many Thanks
