  • External enclosure – please advise

Posted by Drake Hatfield on September 20, 2011 at 6:34 pm

I am looking to purchase an external raid array. I’m thinking 4 (four) 2TB drives (unless there are reliable 3tb drives that you know of) in a nice enclosure, running raid1, accessed over eSata.

Any specific recommendations? I’ve read extensively to avoid G-Tech, which I am currently doing.

Note: I searched and read throughout the forums but most requests seem to be looking for ‘slightly’ different setups. I am running a Win7, core i7 workstation, editing on Vegas.

    Drake,

My 2 cents? https://www.stardom-usa.com/product_detail.php?p_id=72 this product is sold unpopulated, that is without drives, but will do what you need it to do using eSATA.

    We have stock.

Call me low budget, but I work on feature films & post on doc’s. I use a MacPro with a Sonnet E4p and (2) SansDigital 8 bay raid cabinets from Other World Computing. I stripe 4 together.

Now I would assume a $1300 cabinet compared to a $300 cabinet should be nicer, and perhaps more reliable… but these RAIDS are always a little touchy to get the speeds anyway. (Use backups!) I get 200/mbs with a (4) 1tb disc RAID 0, done in the Disk Utility of OS X.

I have replaced one in 3 years as a board burned out. But, it’s still cheap.

I would look into the Seagra Technology, Inc Desktop 5 Bay RAID 3,5 Storage Array. STSRFC4-X is the product. They also have FC4 HBA which is STF400PE product. Please take a look at it. Very price competitive and high performance product. They have 100+ system out and very reliable. Support is great.

They provide with the Complete Solution which means HBA and Storage. You cannot just get external enclosure only which means without drives.

You can use any FC HBA ATTO, Qlogic, Emulex,Seagra Technology.

Thank you very kindly. I am JUST NOW beginning to call around about this and I really appreciate the feedback. Way too many brands to avoid…
