What specs will allow an external drive to work well with Premiere 6 or Premiere Elements? With my older computer my now dead Firewire drive was too slow. I could store video but had to copy it to an internal drive to actually work with it. I figure 7200rpm is best but I’m wondering about what size drive cache is required and whether USB 2 will work. (I know USB2 claims slightly faster specs than Firewire but I understand in practice USB puts more load on the CPU.)

That is true, USB 2.0 could bog down more. Firewire is the recommended route, though I’ve talked with plenty of people who are using USB drives (faster computers in general seem to help alleviate the problem).

7200 RPM should be your minimum. Bigger caches are generally better. Other than that, just keep your system clean and optimized, and it usually works fine.
