External drive set-up via USB 3.0

Obviously an external SSD in a USB 3.0 enclosure will be the fastest but I use either 1TB G-Tech G-Drive Mobile USB or the 1TB WD My Passport USB 3.0 drives and they are plenty fast enough for HD work. I get about 86 MB/s Write and 90 MB/s Read performance on those drives via USB 3.0.

BTW, I pick up the 1TB WD My Passport drives at NewEgg.com for $59 when they go on sale (and they go on sale a lot so I buy a few at a time to keep on hand)

I was going to buy an enclosure and put my spare SSD in it… and probably will… tho I do like the look of some of the external storage bays with onboard RAID controllers, but that can wait until my money tree begins to bear fruit. Ideally you need a Thunderbolt interface on your machine to take advantage of the real power that such a set-up can offer and of course you have T’bolt on your Mac Book Pro… I was looking at getting one but at 1500 quid it beat me at the moment. The Mac Pro is still on my list but I want to wait and get the right one at the right price.

However….I take delivery tomorrow of this baby.

Got it for £999… with 3 yrs international warranty… and I get 7 days to install and test vegas and if it ‘doesn’t suit my purpose’ I can send it back for a full refund… now that works for me !!!

I need a series of SVP 12 tests to run… can you suggest a pre selected benchmarking test package…?

Any modern RAID 0 (hardware controller, not software) with Samsung Pro SSD drives is fast enough for HD video. If you want to work with 4k video, you’ll need to get break open the piggy bank and step up to something like a G Drive high end box.

I just discovered an external SSD via USB 3.0 has the best performance by making sure you have the right SATA III bridge with UASP support in an enclosure AND that same UASP needs to be available on your motherboard.

Not so simple to check with a laptop.

Anyone know of a database of motherboard schematics and which freeware diagnostics will tell you installed motherboard info so you can match to said database…? Or are motherboard diagrams heavily guarded secret…? lol
