  • External Drive recommendations?

    Hi, all —

I work for the state of California and we have four workstations with the Video Collection on each. Three of these stations are Dell XPS laptops (with the sweet WUXGA screens) and one is a desktop. We use external firewire drives for our media.

Recently we had one of our drives go down, and while much of the material was backed up, I’m wondering if anyone out there can recommend reliable external firewire drives. What experience do folks have?

Any input is appreciated — specifically brand and make. We’d like these drives to be 250 GB or greater.

    Thanks!

I favored WD drives for a while, but after one sudden crash for no apparent reason, I have been going towards Lacie. Excellent drives, small size, cool and quite!

PS: Are you using the Dell XPS Gen 1 or the Gen 2? I had the Gen 1 and it was like a frying pan.

We have the XPS Gen 2. Nice machine — despite the tacky LEDs that glow all over the place….

I’ve been hearing good things about the LaCie drives (and they have up to 2 TB — yes terabytes! — available this month). The crash we had was a Western Digital, so I’m feeling a little shy about them.

Yea, the XPS 2 is a nice machine. If you want a program to make the LEDs dance, let me know LOL. Anyway, I would reccomend getting medium sized HDDs instead of the huge 2TB one you mention above. First of all, they are easier to backup and will be more portable.

Any drive, no matter what the brand, can die without warning. The only way to protect your content is to use a Raid5 external drive system.
