External Drive or Computer Drive?
Posted by Jon Whatley on June 17, 2012 at 12:25 amAn elementary question I’m sure but here it goes. What are the pros and cons of saving footage on an external drive as opposed to a computer’s drive?

June 17, 2012 at 2:29 amExternal. Because the system drive is often 5200 PRM…which is too slow. And one thing that it constantly does, because it houses the OS, is constantly accesses system resources. This will cause video playback to be interrupted, and you will get dropped frames.
Up to you if you want to do it. Those are the reasons not too.
Oh, and if the drive dies, and the project and media are lost…well..hosed.

June 17, 2012 at 2:38 amThanks, Shane. I’m trying to convince a friend (an amateur editor) that saving to the computer is a no no. I keep telling him that you can buy an external for next to nothing nowadays. He’ll learn soon enough lol

If it’s a second drive, just as a long as it’s not the OS/Apps Drive.Chris Tompkins
