External Device connection?
General question on connecting to external drive:
I’m using a 3.5 TB external drive which is connected to a RAID server with a gigabit ethernet cord. I’m finding some lag in FCP operation and general work with files, and was thinking maybe it’s the connection that’s the issue. Would Firewire or eSATA make a difference? Maybe not through the server at all?

Sounds like it is a NAS unit (Network attached storage) which uses gigabit ethernet. Although it has fast burst speed, NAS units are not recommended for video editing. I use them for audio which has a much smaller bandwidth but only as backup for video. esata, firewire800 are more suited to video.

I definitely think feeding your edit system via a gigabit network connection is an issue’ except for DV possibly.
And, though they would undoubtedly have vastly more throughput, there’s no way to connect eSATA to an iMac, and I seriously doubt any 6-bay drive enclosures are Firewire capable. Limited connectivity is a major, major issue when considering iMacs for editing use.
You might want to check to see if one on the companies like SmallTree.com may have something to work with your existing network setup.
