  • Extending USB cables (for Wave panels)

    Hi there,

I’ve seen the odd comment from people saying that extending USB cables over 2m is tricky. So, if you have a USB device on your desk and the computer it’s plugged into is in another room it may seem impossible or expensive. USB is designed only to run short distances.

Well, that’s not the case. We’ve been testing a box from Lindy that allows you to have your computer 50m away from your USB devices, and it’s all done over Cat 5 (standard Ethernet) cable. So far it’s worked perfectly well with our Wave control Panel and an iImac 27″ which are about 40m apart in our test.

If you’re looking to do something like this with your Wave then take a look at:

    https://www.lindy-usa.com/usb-extension-cat5-usb-extender-42802.html

We are also using the external power supply that you can by with it just to be sure.

    Cheers,

    Chris

I’m successfully using a 35 ft extender cable, (which has a repeated inlaid into the middle of the cable. It works and is about $30. If you’re going longer than that, then yes, I’d end up going with a USB over cat5 as well.

Just beware that the Lindy box is USB1.1, and will thus not be suitable for things like hard drives, etc. (although keyboards, mice, and other HIDs will work fine).

I’m using 18′ (~6m) USB cables into a USB hub and 3′ cables from that, with no issues. But ymmv.

I wasnt sure it was going to work, but it does. On the flip side, I’d love to know any tricks to extend the range of Bluetooth, because I can’t get the magic trackpad to work well more than 3′ away, and definitely not out of the machine room.

Hi all, in the current Resolve for Mac configuration guide, available for everyone on our support web page, I specify the Icron 2204 for USB 2.0 extension. Its not expensive and we have proven them over 50 metres in our own post facility as well as in QA. You must have USB 2.0 for the DaVinci Resolve panels to work as there is a lot of data on this USB. The Icron model has four ports at the receiver end so you can connect the panel and keyboard and a tablet etc.
