    Please excuse a total newbie query: I have several clips that I need to place and space on a single track, but when I drag a new clip onto the track it seems to just overlay an existing one. Somehow I need to make room for the new clips, but the length of the track seems fixed. In After Effects I’d just change the comp duration, but I don’t know if there is an equivalent action in Audition

    In CS 6 it automatically adjusts. So if you take a clip in the multitrack view and just start dragging it to the right the composition time will increase.
