  • Extending DVI 80 feet to my suites. What’s best way?

Posted by Steve Garman on May 28, 2007 at 8:50 pm

I need to run two 80 foot DVI cables from my MacPro in the core to the monitors in the suites. What will work better for this the long DVI cables or Cat 5 with DVI boxes? I’ll also need an 80 foot run for HDMI and again, there are Cat 5 versions and actual HDMI long cable versions. Which are the best value for performance and cost? And where would be the place to get them?

Also, Ive seen DVI long run solutions listed as Single link and Dual link DVI. Does Dual link mean that different DVI signals for two monitors are sent over the same cable? I have an ATI X1900 card and I need two monitor feeds so that would be a Godsend to have both monitors fed by one cable. (I bet that’s not what it means)Ha!

dual link means you need 2 separate lines to achieve the higher resolution for 2k work.

DVI is very limited in length which is one of the main reasons HDMI was invented.

I would do DVI over cat5/6 network cable with those converter boxes since the network cable can go to at least 300 ft with no degradation.

    I use these:

They work great. Since you only need 80ft. I highly recommend this solution. You’ll just need HDMI/DVI adapters which that website also sells for very low prices.

This solution is for single-link only (for monitors up to 1920×1200). If you have a 30″ Cinema Display, you’ll need dual link – in which case you’ll need a much more expensive Cat5 type solution.

So you’re saying to send my DVI card outputs from the Mac to the DVI monitor inputs iin the suite, I should convert it to HDMI send over an 80 ft HDMI cable and then convert it back to DVI at the monitor end?

We use these HDTV Extreme DVI cables to 2 suites, both with a 20″ and 23″ monitor. One cable for each monitor and each card. One suite is about 90 feet away and the other is about 130 feet. They also have a dual-link solution.

Each cable should be 50ft or less. So get a 50ft. cable from the Mac to the repeater. Then use a 30ft. cable from the repeater to the monitor.

You can also get cables that have DVI on one end and HDMI on the other, rather than use adapters.

though i’ve not personally done it. i hear that you can convert DVI to a 5 wire BNC and then extend via the BNC with an adapter on each end
