Expressions on inactive layers. Do they execute?
Does anyone know if expressions still run on inactive layers (eye poked out)?
I also wonder if they still run on an active shape layer with the content containing an expression eyed out?
I would love to know this. It seems like it may be the case but I am unsure.
Is there a way to tell what expressions are actively running on any given composition?

That is a good question, I would assume that if anything is visible in the composition viewer, any expressions it is connected to will execute / run. So if Layer 1 position property is linked to Layer 2 position property, which is then linked to a Control Layer’s Slider, and Layer 2 is turned off – the expression that Layer 2 has will still execute because Layer 1 is using it.
You could have a deep web of expressions but none of them will execute unless a layer that is visible is using it.

While maybe someone will have a definite answer to this – heres what you could do.
~ Render project expressions free.
~ Render project with ALL expressions enabled.
~ Render project with your ‘partial’ enabled expressions/ideas in place.Compare render times. If difference is hard to be noticed, use more comps, with more layers and more expressions to introduce more of computation on board.
Its one of the best feelings to nail down something by plain analysis, on your own feet, about something, which could have long-lasting benefit. Cheers!
