    Hi,

I need help creating an expression that would identify the machine which has authored a given frame. This would show up as a layer of text over each frame of a animated sequence.
The purpose of this is to identify what machine has rendered what when using the After Effects watch folder. I know that I can get a listing from the html document if I have the logs set correctly, but this other method of writing on the file would be better for me.

I have used expressions like “thisLayer.name” to identify layers, and was hoping for something like “thisComputer.name”, but that property is not recognized.

    Any thought?

    Thanks,

    Russ

No way. Expressions have no access to system info as they run sandboxed. You could try to have a script that gives you the IP of a machine, but it would have to be executed as a post-Render script and for it to work you needed to have another script that renders every single frame as a separate render queue item. If you are really dependent on such info for debugging resons and have a considerable render farm, I strongly suggest you get a render manager like Muster. They do all the logging and can greatly help you there.

Thanks. Just trying to keep the render farm simple. With the ‘Watch Folder’ I have no issues with licensing etc, and it works. To be honest, most of what I read about third party render farms for After Effects is not the glowing. When they work, it is generally for window systems. With the ‘Watch Folder’ I have to keep a look out for fonts, but since all the plug-ins and server mounts are always the same, things usually work.
