    This should do it:

    fadeInTime = 1; // fade in time (seconds)
    fadeOutTime = 1;

    Math.min(linear(time,inPoint,inPoint + fadeInTime,0,100),linear(time,outPoint – fadeOutTime,outPoint,100,0))

    … and of course, if you like, you can create a null with two Slider Expression Controls (apply from the Effects menu) named FadeInSlider, FadeOutSlider, then select each “1” for the fade times (in Dan’s expression) and pickwhip each “1” to the value for the appropriate Slider control.

    This will replace each “1” with the value of each Slider control and allow you to use a slider to control the length of the fade.
