    Hey folks,

    Can anyone enlighten me here,

I recently saw an editor overlay a video on top of an identical video in order to isolate a region and brighten it thus darkening the remaining parts. It worked very well. The effected region was an interviewee who was sitting in front of a window facing the camera. He was underexposed, though this method helped improve everything.

Can anyone explain here how that can be done in Sony Vegas. I can assume the overlaying is straightforward, though what tools to use, and how for isolating and cutting around has got me scratching my head.

Thanks for taking the time to read this; grateful for any assistance…

Sure, stick up an example Still here and I’ll show you. Writing it out will be a task. At the end I’ll post the VEG for you.

    Cheers

    Hi Grazie,

    Thanks,

Do you mean the still from the video that I propose to work on ?
If so, then here it is. Ive also uploaded a still with a little work I did just now with the cookie cutter and brightness and contrast settings for you to see the results I have achieved; maybe it cant be taken any further, or what do you think ? Any other advice would be great!

    Thanks again,

    Neil

You’ve done awfully well! Considering you’ve got everything against you: High Back lit background; foreground subject in deep shadow; colour balance is, well, less than manipulable or available in post – though I’ve had a go. Considering everything you have to work with, no, you’ve done very well. I’m impressed.

NB1: I’d stay well clear on the Brightness and Contrast FX! But what you’ve achieved, I’m also eating my words here…

What I’ve done is to respond to your intial wish to do the Masking thing – I’ve done it. If you want the VEG, holla!

O..K… Taking that reversed situ: BG on the edge of being blown and a foreground – the SUBJECT – underexposed, we’re now looking at treatments that will ADD to the narrative not take away. I’m assuming the focus for our attention is the player, and not the glinting lamps? OK, I feel the player should become more prominent, and those lamps, pushed even further to the rear of the story-line – yes? You put glint on them – that just drew even more of my attention to them. I’ve used Gaussian blur. You decide!

Here yah goes using the Masking and FX-ing:-

This with further FX (BumpMap) alteration/variations:-

NB2: I’m assuming the player and his bass and the panning of the camera will all be on the move, this will make “tracking” the Mask to the areas a total nightmare?!

Thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to get out my Toolset! Thank you.

    Cheers,

    Thanks Grazie

Enjoyed seeing your results. I think were similar on achievements there using different tools. The performance was recorded on a tripod, and that particular piece is static; so no need for tracking or keying of any sort. I just used a cookie cutter on the facial region, and yes, I added a glint to the lights.

I filmed 10 songs. And cut it down to 3:30 seconds. Most of the shots have much better lighting; what you worked on there was the worst shot I have. I decided to use the glint as an extra effect; the shot in motion was just getting a tad boring so I decided to make a bit more magical! Thankfully the sound recording came out fine. I could send you the VEG of that particular clip; would you like that?

Should I send you original (avchd) or my MP4 output ? And how, through dropbox, or here on Creative Cow…
Please don’t feel obliged to go any further; you have been more than helpful to me.

    Hi Neil – you’re welcome.

Are you satisfied with what you’ve done? Yes? Then no need to go any further.

    Cheers
