  • Exporting XML from AVID, Import into Final Cut Pro

    Hello All,

I am trying to export out a XML of sequence out of AVID & import it into Final Cut. I figured out how to export an XML out of AVID using Filmscribe but Final Cut is not liking the XML document and it asks for a translation template when importing.

Is there a certain setting i need to using when exporting out this XML out of AVID?

It won’t work. You need to export an AAF that links to the media, and then use Automatic Duck Pro Import to get this into FCP. Avid’s implementation of XML is very weak.

It’s not so much that’s it weak, it just requires an extra step to generate and offers more types of lists as XML such as Pull, Scene Pull, Change list, etc. which can cause some confusion.

The bigger issue is that XML is not a one type file description. It allows for easier description of metadata by allowing the tage to live with the description. But what FCP calls Reel, Avid calls Tape so there needs to be an XML to XML translator file called an XSLT to get moving in that direction.

Also, the XML from Avid is as complete as FilmScribe offers, so deep effects and others are not as richly described as one may want to have.

AAF is the easier way to go right now for this type of workflow. XML from Avid is being used on large feature type prodcutions to parse the type of metadata used in those workflows.

Is it Possible to import an Avid Media Composer 6(Windows 7)EDL in to FCP. I tried a lot of options in Exporting EDl such as CMX3600,CMX3400,File16,etc…, but CMX3600 seems to work in Importing in FCP. But when I reconect it with the source and render, the clip plays from the point where I does not select (From In point to Out point). In simple words, it plays before the In point and Out point. What would be the cause for this problem?.

I’ve never got a right edl comform on Fcp generated on Avid, it’s better aaf, or I thinki so!

Can Final Cut 7 take in .aaf? I am trying to take a small sequence from Composer 8 to Final Cut 7, what would be the best way of doing this correctly?

No, FCP cannot do that. It needs the aid of third party software. Automatic Duck did this, but is now down while they update their software. You can also look into Boris AAF Import.
