  • Exporting without loss of quality

Posted by Julian Fisher on May 5, 2010 at 11:08 pm

    Hi there,

I havn’t used FCP in a long time but I have made a project with FCP7 and I can’t work out how to export it out without loss of quality. I have tried exporting out as a quicktime movie and with quicktime conversion but I must be entering the wrong settings or something because the result is always a very obvious loss of quality.

I’m shooting with an Sony EX3 at 1080 50p, so wondering what the export settings need to be to keep it looking remotely HD without compression if that’s possible.

Do I make it an AVI?

Thanks for any help you can give…

Sorry I’m not at all technical…

    #3 Output lossless Quicktime movies

Shane’s Stock Answer #3: How to output lossless Quicktime movies

To export your project so there is no loss in quality, simply go to the File Menu and select EXPORT>QUICKTIME MOVIE. Not Quicktime Conversion, for this will compress the footage. Make sure the settings match your timeline settings, make it self contained, do NOT recompress the footage, and you are set.

If you see that your movie looks brighter in QT than it did in FCP…you’re right. QT lightens the gamma to ensure visibility on ALL computer monitors. But know that it looks just like it did in FCP…and on an External broadcast monitor, if you reimported into FCP. Try that…see that it will be the same.

..and it (hopefully) goes without saying that it will reflect faithfully the quality of the codec you used in your FCP time-line, which can be lower than the native media.
So what codec did you choose?

The codec was official Sony EX3 plug in specifically for getting clips into FCP…

For all you Sony EX3 users..
What are the characteristics of the XD cam editing presets that actually run in FCP 6+? Surely a frame-by-frame algorithm etc

    Thanks mate,

Yeah I did that but I didn’t change the settings…..Should I change settings to what I shot eg- XDCAM EX or do I choose one of the apple settings?

I’m just noticing a bit of noise in the picture eg- the bright paint job on moving cars. Should I expect this from viewing only with the Macbook Pro I cut it on?

    Thanks very much mate….Cheers
