Exporting with timecode burned in
Hi all,
I’m exporting low res quicktime files to be transcribed. Is it possible to burn in the original timecode so that the transcripts can reflect this?

Yes. Get the Timecode Reader filter from your video effects folder. drag it to all of your clips, render and export.

If you are using Compressor 3 to make your Quicktimes, you can add the burned in timecode in the Filters pane.
This is pretty cool, as you wont need to tie up FCP with rendering the burn in on a long program. Of course, Compressor will take a bit longer to make your Quicktime, but you can continue to use FCP.

The only problem with compressor is that it will only do sequence tc and not clip tc (unless I am mistaken). For transcripts you need the clip tc.

This is exactly what we do with our transcriptions. We capture the clips into FCP, then quit out of FCP and bring the raw files directly into Compressor. Compressor reads the TC off the QT files so there’s no reason to get FCP involved once you’ve got the clips in. You can also set In / Out points in Compressor if you don’t need to transcribe an entire tape.
Works much much faster than first rendering out the TC Window filter in FCP and then sending that into compressor.

Compressor will do clip TC. You just bring the raw clips directly into Compressor. No need to use FCP at all.

Yes, thanks for pointing that out. It will do it clip by clip. I tend to lump one whole interview in a sequence and export as sending a couple hundred video clips to the transcriber can be daunting.
