    Hey FCP Cow!

i did a quick search and couldnt find any info on this topic:

we produce TV shows and Movies in particular and i’d like to make a DVD of the final projects with the shot names superimposed. this way, an editor can watch a DVD from a past project, determine which shots they need for their current project (or for a stock footage sale), get that shot name, and recapture the shot from the original log file project. we keep Media Managed versions of all of our projects on SDLT, but if we only need a few shots, then reconnecting to an SDLT is not worth the time spent.

i was thinking that just creating a lower third text in the Final Cut timeline, and entering that info manually shot by shot would be the way to do it. but if Final Cut already knows the names of these shots, there must be a fast way to export this info. perhaps an Automator action?

We have 4 G5s hooked up to Xsan, FCP 5.1.4, Kona LH.

    thanks for any help.

You could export and EDL with the clip names as a note and send it along with the DVD. Reading and EDL may be a lost art, but it would save you a lot of typing. And most editors should be able to figure it out.

Off the top of my head here. FCP is not open.
Highlight the clip in the timeline. Hit Shift-“F” to highlight it in the bin. Highlight the clip name and Command “C” to copy it. Open the FCP text tool and paste (Command “V”) the clip name into the text window. Insert the text over the already highlighted clip in the timeline. Repeat as necessary. Burn to DVD or export for DVDSP.
A little cumbersome but quick and easy once you get the rhythm.
Or print the EDL as mentioned above. Good practice for all of you young bucks out there to read an EDL. Now I’ll go back into the cave…
