Exporting video to use in Final Cut Pro 7
Posted by Eric Nicastro on November 3, 2009 at 5:27 pmI work in Avid Media Composer v3.1.1. I need to export video clips to be used in FCP 7. But when I use the fast export NTSC option, FCP and the Quicktime player on my MacBook Pro says they can’t recognize the file. What am I doing wrong or what settings should I be using?

November 3, 2009 at 7:57 pmWhen you use fast export you are using the codec you are using in Avid. If you don’t have the codec on your FCP Mac, it won’t work. Though that shouldn’t show up as an unrecognized file.
Are you exporting a QT or maybe you have AVI selected which is definitely an issue in the Mac universe?

November 3, 2009 at 8:46 pmI changed the export settings to use custom settings and that seemed to work. I’ve got an interlace issue now, even if I change the field order in my export settings, it doesn’t correct the problem in FCP. Might be a setting with FCP.
Is it possible to get just that Avid Codec to install on my FCP Mac?

November 3, 2009 at 9:47 pmYes, you can find the Avid codecs on the Avid site.
As for the “field issue”, that may be a resizing issue also.
Try exporting as a Quicktime movie with no compression. Also, what resolution are you working in?

November 3, 2009 at 10:04 pmI installed the Avid codec on my Mac and it’s playing the files in FCP but not in the Quicktime player itself. It plays the audio, but no video. Am I am still having a field issue. I’m working in 720×486 DV50. If I select to use the Avid Codec, it doesn’t let me change the field order or the resolution.

This is why you are having a problem. DV and DV 50 are normally 720 x 480, though I believe using the Avid codec you can select to use 720 x 486. This should not be a big problem in FCP…just add the Shift Fields filter in FCP.
