Exporting via QT or Compressor
Posted by Rocco Rocco on November 22, 2005 at 7:20 pmWhat, if any, is the difference between exporting a sequence via these to methods:
Export via Quicktime conversion, selecting 8-bit Uncompressed, highest settings
and:
Exporting via Compressor, using 8-bit Uncompressed…
Is there a fundamental difference between the two methods or will it result in the same output because it uses the same Codec?
thanks for any info

November 22, 2005 at 9:56 pm>>> It will be the same. If all the settings are the same for both exports.<<< If only that were true. Unfortunately, I've found that using the EXACT same settings in "Compressor" and in "Quicktime Conversion" do NOT produce the same results, especially with H.264/MPEG4. Using the exact same settings, Compressor's files are always considerably larger, and the aspect ratio is not what I specified. I'd like nothing more then to use Compressor to batch automate all the files I have to output everyday, but I've found it to be unreliable in this regard. This baffles me, because I'm assuming that they both use the same QT conversion engine to do their magic. All the best, Michael Buday

November 22, 2005 at 11:02 pmExporting 8bit UC should result in the same size file using either export option because there is no compression being applied. As long as the resolution stays constant, the size and quality should be close to identical.
Exporting MPEG or any other compressed files will likely result in different file sizes and qualities because of the number of options available during compression. Different VBR settings, 2-pass encoding, different scaling options, etc.

November 24, 2005 at 1:27 amIt’s funny you ask, because I have been experiencing some weirdness between the two kinds of exports as well. I use DVCproHD sequences and media, on a Dual 2.0 G5, running FCP 5.0.1, QT 7.0.1 and OSX 10.4.1. When I export a sequence to compressor and have it make an uncompressed 8bit master, it is pixelated and looks like crap. When I do the same thing straight out of FCP using the QT conversion export, and put in the same settings, it comes out nice and beautiful! Better than the original footage. Not really sure why or how this works, but I’ve just accepted that to upconvert and make a final master, I need to use the QT Conversion export straight out of FCP.
