Exporting using compressor
Posted by Will Gaffney on March 12, 2009 at 12:49 amI’m working on a project in Final Cut Pro at the moment (HDV 1440 x 1080 50i – PAL – 16:9) and would like to export a sample to show my client. When I choose to export the clip using compressor, the program opens and displays my clip in the preview window in 4:3 stretched as opposed to 16:9 which it is in my Final Cut Project.
No matter what settings I use for my export (MPEG, DV, HDV – selecting 16:9 as the aspect) the export ends up in 4:3 instead of 16:9
I have tried everything I can think of. Can someone please help?Maurice Salazar replied 16 years, 6 months ago 4 Members · 11 Replies -

Bellow is a screen grab of the A/V Attributes tab in the Compressor Inspector. As you can see, my source happens to be full raster 1920×1080, yours will be different, but I want to see it, so please post a screen shot of your A/V Attributes tab. If you don’t know how to do it post images yet here on the Cow now’s your chance to figure it out, and this will wind up being an excellent exercise for you. It’s really crucial in helping to solve issues here on the Cow.

March 12, 2009 at 5:03 amOkay Will, now that I know the basics of what you’ve got, tell me exactly what you want. You said you’d tried HDV, MPEG, and DV, but since we’re going to quit “trying” actually “do it,” you need to let me know what your first choice is. For the record, most pros these days typically deliver h.264.
I have taken a complete different route over the last months, and I deliver HD demos to my clients via Vimeo. Are familiar with Vimeo? I can tell you how to do that if you’d like, or I can show you how to get what you want out of Compressor, you make the call.

March 12, 2009 at 5:52 amThank you so much for your help david!
There are 3 separate tasks that I need to complete for this project. I need to be able to export the finished product for Web, SD DVD & HD DVD.
Right now my priority is the web upload as my client is currently in another country and I need to get them a sample. I’ve heard of vimeo, and seen clips online with the vimeo logo on it but had no experience with it.

March 12, 2009 at 7:17 amThere is no FCS HD DVD solution now, so let’s deal with web first, then SD DVD. To make a 16×9 h.264 at
1. Export your a self contained movie at current settings with File>>Export>>Quicktime Movie (do not check the render all frames box).
2. Drag the QT onto the batch drop zone in Compressor
3. Now, select the H.264 preset from the Settings tab (see below) and drag and drop that onto the target area.

4. Click to on that setting in the batch area to select it and to load it in the Inspector.

5. In the Geometry tab of the Inspector change the Frame Size to 25%

6. Hit Submit and go… That’s all there is to it.

March 12, 2009 at 4:28 pm[Will Gaffney] “think you might be able to tell me what settings to use prior to DVD authoring?
“1. Use the same self-contained QT you used before
2. This time use the preset “DVD: Best Quality 120 Minutes — it contains both an audio preset (Dolby Digital AC3) and a video preset (MPEG-2 M2V). Just drag and drop the folder, it applies both presets at once.
“
3. Once applied, click on the MPEG-2 setting to highlight it and to load in the Inspector.
4. Check in the Encoder tab of the Inspector window to insure that Aspect Ratio is set to 16:9 — if not, first click on that silly icon on the right that looks like a gear to enable the dropdown and change to 16:9.
5. Change Video Format to PAL since you’re in PAL land.
6. That’s it… hit submit.
7. Afterward, use the M2V video and the AC3 audio files in DVDSP to author your DVD — make sure you set the setting “pan and scan & letterbox” which sets the flag to make your DVD display 16×9 on widescreen monitors and letterboxed on 4×3 monitors.David Roth Weiss

March 13, 2009 at 3:55 amThats great! Thank you so much David!
In the end, my main problem was that I was trying to export from FCP using Compressor, instead of exporting the MOV directly from FCP and importing that into compressor!
Thank you again for all your help! No doubt I’ll be calling on your services again one day soon!
Will
