    Howdy,

I’ve got a large amount of movie files to put up on the web anywhere from
100mb to a couple gigs, so these days I’m wondering what’s the best codec/way of doing it
to put high quality images and sound online. Both for the 56k modem users and the high speed
    connects.

I apprecaite your tips and for taking the time,

    Will Keir

I think you need to decide the format… i.e. QT? Flash?

    Will,

There is no perfect solution, yet. QT using the Sorenson codec works well for those who have QT installed. WMV works well for those who have Windows Media Player installed, and Flash works well for those with the latest Flash Players. Flash is what the major studios here in Hollywood are using now, because it looks good and file sizes are relatively small, however, encoding Flash does require additional software beyond that in FCP Studio and not everyone has the latest player installed. WMV also requires a plugin such as Flip4MAC. Look around the web and see what you like, but know going in that there is not one pat answer to your question.

Well, there is, but it’s not so good. MPEG1 will play on almost any machine, quicktime, windows, wmp, whatever.

…and there’s painting on cave walls too, but that’s not very good either.

I’ve been putting web movies up for about 3 years now, and have decided that I am going to be QT only.
I use Sorenson Pro for Mac, and, depending on the audience, vary the file size and quality.
    Some examples.
    htttp://www.edgesportfishing.com
Click on the videos link, and see what a “medium” quality i.e. 320X240 looks like. 1 minute about 1.7 megs.

Higher quality and some widescreen. The higher quality varies between 5-7 megs per minute.
I have dabbled with the Flash versions, and just don’t like them as well.

    Hey Matt,

FWIW the latest release of Episode Pro makes killer WMV files.
