Exporting To Tape(DV)
Posted by Dan Cooper on February 13, 2007 at 3:14 amJust a quick query,
Everytime i try to copy a movie from my timeline / sequence onto tape, i only end up with a black screen and nothing copied over. I have a Sony DVCAM deck attached to my comp via firewire.
Can you please let me know the process to get this happening?
Thanks for your imput,

Shane’s Stock Answer #8:
A simple path is mac > firewire > camera or deck > rca cables > tv
Then start up your camera and tv, then open fcp.
Then go View > External video > all frames
Video playback should be Apple firewire NTSC (If you are using an NTSC set)
Audio playback should be Audio follows VideoTechinially, this should send synched video to your TV
If for some reason you can’t view your timeline on your external monitor, there are a few things to try:
1) Make sure that the camera/deck is connected and powered on BEFORE you open FCP.
2) In the Final Cut Pro menu select AUDIO/VIDEO Preferences and make sure your signal is being sent out thru Firewire DV.
3) Go to the menu and select VIEW>EXTERNAL>ALL FRAMES.
4) Click in the % box above the image and select FIT TO WINDOW.
5) Go to VIEW->refresh A/V devices
6) Make sure the Log & Capture window is closed
If you want it to play in both the canvas and the external monitor you need to go to the FINAL CUT PRO menu and select AUDIO/VIDIO settings and make sure MIRROR ON DESKTOP is selected under the PLAYBACK OUTPUT section

What i need to know though, is how to record/copy the video from my project onto DV Tape?
Thanks,

February 13, 2007 at 11:27 pmHook up everything as I described. You should then see an image on your camera’s viewfinder. Put in a tape….press record…press play on your timeline.
Or go FILE>EXPORT>PRINT TO VIDEO.
Time to read those manuals, or at LEAST look at the tutorials. This is very basic stuff…

February 14, 2007 at 2:08 amHi Shane,
I have done all of the above, but there must be something not right because no image appears on the camcorder or deck when recorded (audio does however).
I can view the an image when i go View>External Video>Current frame, but not when I select >External Video>All Frames, or when i open the Edit to Tape window.
Thanks for the time, I really appreciate it

February 14, 2007 at 2:19 amWhat are your sequence settings? What format are you trying to output? What option is chosen under VIDEO PLAYBACK?

February 14, 2007 at 3:33 amGood news on the video front… in the playback output settings i took off mirror on desktop checkbox, so now i can see and record video on the camera/tape.
The only problem now is that after it starts to record for awhile, it pauses and says it drops frames. I have a 2.3 duel G5 w/ 2gig ram, so that shouldn’t be the issue.
FCP specs are:
Output format = DV Tape
Sequence settings:
– frame size = 720 x 576 PAL CCIR601
– Quicktime compression = nonePlayback settings are:
– unlimited RT
– Video Quality = Dynamic
– Pulldown Pattern 2:3:2:3
– Record Quality = FullAny idea?
