What is the Best way to Export a Program to Standard Def from HD.
I shot in EX1 1920×1080 30P Should I use Standard Def Project settings from the beginning and Export or Edit in HD project settings and then Render out to something Standard? It is for Broadcasting. Open to any work flow that is best for keeping quality.

I like to work in an HD project and then render to DV Widescreen for final output. This gives you the option later to render to HD if needed.

    Sir John
I am not sure I ask the correct question OR I might just miss understand. I was told by the network they have a HD broadcast and Standard D. I am sending them a standard D pilot. Is a standard Def and Standard DV synonymous terms. If so will standard DV wide screen then play on standard Def TV no problem, just with those bars on it?

How are you going to “physically” deliver the pilot? On tape?, hard drive? file upload? You need to understand what formats the network can ingest and then supply it in that format.

Is a standard Def and Standard DV synonymous terms.

Yes, for the most part. You can have standard definition as 720×480 or 704×480. You need to ask the network which they expect.

If so will standard DV wide screen then play on standard Def TV no problem, just with those bars on it?

Theoretically yes. Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be a standard way to broadcast the fact that something is widescreen and so widescreen footage that is targeted for SD is often letterboxed into a 4:3 image before it is broadcast.

Usually networks publish their standards for submission. You should get a copy of that document and read it. Make sure that your video is broadcast safe. Make sure that your audio doesn’t exceed their limits. Sometimes they have different limits for dialog, music, and sound fx. You need to keep within them.

Just curious… if you shot HD why would you send an SD pilot?

They said send it on a flash drive in an MPEG 2 “program stream” file. It is for the standard Def channel that is why I was going to Standard Def. I could send HD for the pilot but I figured if we are going to be on the standard Def channel it would be best to send the pilot in that so they could see it in that format.

I want to know what will keep the best quality for SD broadcasting and if I needed to crop it to 720×480?
I am an experienced editor on editors with TAPE – relatively new to NLE.

OK, that’s good information. There is no template for this but it’s easy to modify an existing template.

    1. Use File | Render As…
    2. For Save as type: select MainConcept MPEG-2
    3. Under Template select DVD NTSC
    4. Press the Custom… button (you need to make it widescreen)
    5. On the Video tab under Aspect Ratio change it to 16:9 Display
    6. Change the name of the template to “DVD NTSC Widescreen” and save it using the diskette icon.
    7. Press OK to accept this template.
    8. Press Save to render the video.

Now any time you need to render again just select the “DVD NTSC Widescreen” template and you’re good to go.
