  • Exporting shadows for compositing in After Effects

I am struggling a bit with this. I have come over from 3DS Max and am finding there are some big differences. No big deal, I expected that. But now I need to export an animation to After Effects. In 3DS I would just drop the shadow matte material on the objects and export. Not in Cinema it seems. Is there any way to do this without rendering out all the different passes? If I were rendering in Cinema I’d have no issues. But this needs to be done in AE.

    Chris,

This is an ongoing discussion in C4D world and there are many workarounds. The one I’ve been using most often is to use compositing tags with “Seen by Camera” unchecked. You can also apply different shaders to speed things up (no reflection, etc). There is a plugin called Render Elements which really helps out with manual render layers, check it out.

    Best,
    Craig
