  • Exporting Sequence with transparent background

Posted by Jonathan Lester on January 7, 2010 at 4:08 am

    HI guys.
I have a 5 second sequence of cropped PNG frames that have a character with a transparent background. I need to do 2 things:

    1) Make the series of 30+ individual PNG frames a single clip (via exporting or whatever) so I can add effects such as fades and dissolves

    2) Export the finished product into After Effects while mainting the transparent background. Once a desired effect is applied, send that file BACK to FCP to be placed in the final product for futher editing.

I’ve been reading it has something to do with an alpha channel and the animation codec. I’ve tried everything I know of (and could figure out on my own) and still could not get the desired transparency.

    Please help. 🙁

    Hi Johnathan,
You could import directly your stills to AE and work with them as with a movie.
If you want to make a movie with them in FC, you have to lie them in a sequence with a codec supporting Alpha channel (Animation, Prores 444, Sheer,..). To activate the Alpha Channel, so your clip retain the transparency, you must check “Millions of Colors” in the compressor (codec).

Rafael – i may be wrong but i thought the alpha channel is the option “millions of colors+” – where the + denotes the alpha channel

    You are absolutely right Adam.
    I didn’t type the “+”.

I’ve tried exporting all the individual frames with the animation codec, using millions of colors+, into a single quicktime file, but then when I put it back into FCP, the background is solid black, even when placed on top of a second clip. (?)

[Jonathan Lester] “I’ve tried exporting all the individual frames with the animation codec, using millions of colors+, into a single quicktime file, but then when I put it back into FCP, the background is solid black, even when placed on top of a second clip. (?)

the interpolation of the alpha is set incorrectly.
There’s not need to be doing this in FCP, you’re just adding several apparently difficult steps and, for you, complicated functions. Do it in AE.

Thanks guys. I wound up just importing the still images into AE, running them together (tediously, since I’ve only used the program twice) then exporting it back to FCP. Worked great!

Now, I’m just trying to find a tutorial for my effect. Thanks for the help!
