I’m putting a 60 min. film out to an external drive with more than 100gb on it. My main internal drive only had 13 gb the first time I did the conversion, it failed with the “too big” error and I only had 11gb left, so I tried again and only have 9gb on my main drive and nothing created or used in the external. I’m saving it in the external when I go to do the conversion. Any ideas? Is h.264 the best codec? it seems to be my default or should I use DV-PAL (My footage was PAL).

Are you generating the QT in compressor? Compressor will give you an estimated file size. Also hard drives need some breathing room to function. As a rule of thumb keep 10% of the hard drives total size free. Dig into that buffer and you’ll experience difficulties.
