Can anyone help me with this…I need to back up miniDV masters to AVI files and store on an external hard drive. So…using Final Cut, capture entire tape, drag sequence to timeline, then export using QT Conversion, AVI, right? But what if I need to use those AVI files for a future edit? Will FCP recognize them? I saw a mention of DV AVI but could not find a preset for that in export settings.
Any sure fire way of doing this?
    Thanks!

Please help us to help you by explaining why you need AVIs to work with in FCP?

Well, we use FCP. But I have a client who wants everything from mini DV masters digitized and backed up to external hard drives. If we export as Quicktime files, then any future editing would have to be done on a Mac, right? I think they are wanting a file that is cross platform. Therefore, I want to make sure that we can pull the AVI files into FCP and edit to our hearts content. Of course AVI will import easily to Avid and other PC based platforms, I just want to make sure we don’t make it difficult on ourselves later when they call and need us to pull files from the external drives for an editing project.

Nope. Avid on a PC can import Quicktimes perfectly, and Premiere can also edit Quicktimes. If what you’re digitizing are simple MiniDV tapes, then there shouldn’t be a problem (another thing would be if you had Quicktime files with a codec that wasn’t available on PC, like DVCPRO HD).
