  • Exporting graphic with alpha from AFX to avid

I am coming across a problem exporting graphics from After Effects that have a feathered or blurred edge to avid. If the graphic is say a circle with a blurry edge over nothing(alpha) and I export using the animation codec, millions+, RGB+Alpha, premultiplied, the graphic comes into avid with black filling in all the feathered parts. The transparency is not functioning right. I don’t think this was a problem before the editors using avid upgraded to 5.6.6 but I have also reinstalled my OS so I am not sure who might have the problem.

instead of premultiplied, set to straight. this will prevent the fringing, or halo issue.

You will also need to choose “invert existing” for the alpha channel option in the avid graphic import settings. Avid sees “white” areas as transparent (as in film), while AE and other graphics software (photoshop) use black…
You might also export find that in addition to using a straight matte, you might also set the field renderer in render settings to lower field first and set Avid’s import settings to match.
