Is there any way to export from avid as an MPEG 2 file? I saw in the export settings there is a “sorenson encode for dvd” option but when i exported it as that it was just a quicktime.

    thanks!

also, if there is no way- is there a more cost effective alternative than sorenson squeeze?

I was never impressed with exporting anything other than same-as-source quicktime files from the Avid. Very slow. Using quicktime reference will give you the highest quality source file you can get. Your best bet is to use a third party encoding software (I’m comfortable with sorenson). Since Sorenson should have come bundled with your software, it’s free. You can (on the PC side, at least) right click on your sequence in the bin, select ‘send to>DVD>Sorenson’. You’ll get a QT reference. From there, you can set up the dialog box to auto launch Sorenson (or whatever software you desire). It’s fairly seamless once you get it set up.

As far as other compression software, there’s a ton. Do a google search and see what you come up with. I know people who love Procoder. I’ve got Cleaner for Mac, and I’ve never been able to get it to encode anything except avi files. I feel it was a waste of money. Personally, the bundled version of Sorenson (on my PC’s)does a great job for me. I just bought the full version and set up a encoding station using a watch folder. I did find out you don’t get continuous encoding with the $500.00 version – you need to spend 10k for that. So, every day, I’ve got to restart the software and start the watch folder process over again.

Thank you- I may go with procoder- I did not get sorenson with my Avid- I had been bugging them since practically last april about it and they said they would get one too me but it might take a bit bc the new squeeze was coming out- A year later I never did get that- I feel calling them is not even worth my time at this point so I’ll probably get myself procoder- Thanks for the help!

Actually, Avid can output Quicktime codecs, HDV, XDCAM MXF OP1a, DV, AVI, Windows Media, but MPEG-2 is not supported. A quick workaround to export MPEG-2 from Avid is to export uncompressed preferably QuickTime from Avid Media Composer and use a video program to create MPEG-2 video for creating DVD.
