  • Exporting frames to retouch and re-import

Posted by Robert Arnold on February 19, 2011 at 3:02 am

I recently exported a few frames out of FCP to Photoshop, in order to rubber-stamp out an errant boom. The problem is that when I re-import the stills back into Final Cut, the gamma of the image seems to have changed and does not match the preceding frames. I’ve tried using PSD, TIFF, and PNG, saving both with and without a color profile, but I still get the shift. I did this before in an older version of FCP/QT and didn’t have any problems. Any ideas what I need to do to make this work?

    Final Cut 7.0.3, OS 10.6.5, QT 7.6.6, Photoshop 11 (CS4).

    Thanks!

This task is much more easily accomplished in Motion, and no format conversion will be required.

    When you said:
“I’ve tried using PSD, TIFF, and PNG, saving both with and without a color profile”
Was that exporting from FCP? Or is that just saving from PS? What options have you tried from FCP?

The method I use is this:
    1: Make freeze frame (Shift-N)
2: Drag from viewer into bin to make independent clip
3: right click on that file and export using quicktime conversion
4: choose still frame in the pull down
    5: use PNG or TIF
6: edit in PS and then save as TIF or PNG.

I don’t get any gamma shift using this method. Hope this helps.

What version of Photoshop? I once had the same problem and had to download the update, which took care of the problem. I can’t remember which version I was using at the time.

Also, I just did the same thing on a project last week, and I had one frame that came in with different gamma. I think I had saved all the frames as JPEG, except the one I was having problems with. So, if you don’t have any luck with anything else, try saving and importing as JPEG.

You have the ability to change the gamma within fcp of imported rgb images.

If working in hd, 2.2 should work.
